Stamurai’s stuttering therapy is a combination
of stuttering modification and fluency
shaping strategies.



Stuttering Modification

Stuttering modification assumes most of the problems of people who stutter arise as a result of avoiding or struggling with disfluencies, avoiding feared words, and avoiding feared situations.
The two elements in stuttering modification are 1) decreasing speech fears and avoidance behaviors, and 2) teaching how to stutter more easily by reducing the physical tension
For decreasing speech fears, self disclosure, voluntary stuttering and seeking out speaking situations instead of avoiding them are taught.
In stuttering modification, people who stutter are taught to talk more fluently or stutter more easily through a combination of certain techniques to modify stuttering. Some of them are Pull Outs, Preparatory Sets, Cancellations
‘Decreasing speech fears’ and ‘Stuttering easily’ interact. If the person adopts a fearless attitude toward stuttering, their stuttering becomes milder. If the person can learn to stutter more easily, the feeling of helplessness and fear decreases.


Fluency Shaping

Fluency shaping is based on operant conditioning and programming principles
In fluency shaping, a great deal of stress is given to the person’s maintenance of fluency by techniques such as slowing speech rate, monitoring speech carefully, or paying particular attention to the easy onset of speech.
Some common techniques are - Light Contacts, Proprioception, Flexible Rate, Pausing, Easy Onsets and Slides.
Fluency Shaping does not generally deal with the stutterer’s fears, attitudes, or general adjustment. But often the work on fluency eventually leads to a reduction in fear.


Combined Approach

A combined approach takes the best of both worlds. Fluency shaping therapy is more efficient at changing speech patterns. While stuttering modification therapy is more effective in reducing speech fears. A combination of the two reinforces each other. More fluency makes acceptance easier. While if you are more comfortable in your own skin, then you are able to use fluency shaping strategies easily.
